New Release: EMOTIONAL WOUND THESAURUS #writerspersevere

Hi everyone! Today I have a special post as part of the Writers Persevere event that authors Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi are running for the next few days to celebrate their newest book , The Emotional Wound Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Psychological Trauma . This book explores the difficult experiences embedded in our characters' backstory which will shape their motivation and behavior afterward. Check out my 5-star review HERE . To help them celebrate this release, many of us are posting stories about some of the obstacles we’ve overcome as writers . As we all know, this isn’t an easy path. Writing is hard and as writers we tend to struggle with doubt. Sometimes too, we don’t always get the support we need to follow our passion, or we have added challenges that make writing more difficult. Because people are sharing their stories this week about how they worked through these challenges to keep writing, I wanted to post about it, too. ~*~ I never intended t...

Guest Post: How the Effects of Proper Health Affect Your Writing

Being a psycho author, I sit a LOT. I sit doing psychotherapy all day long, then I sit at the computer to write at night. Not great for the waistline, back/neck, or overall health! That's why I thank guest blogger Rachael Cherry from Nanny Pro with this awesome advice to keep up your health as you write! Take it away, Rachael... How the Effects of Proper Health Affect Your Writing Being healthy is more than making sure your clothes continue to fit. Proper health affects every aspect of your being. From how you sleep at night to the foods you eat, it all contributes to keeping your body and mind clear. As a writer, you need that clarity of mind in order to continue being successful. It is this success that drives me to keep as active as I can while eating the best foods that promote physical and mental stability. Sleep -  Getting enough sleep plays a prominent role for any writer. You can't expect to sleep for three hours in any given night and be produ...

New Adult Sleepover Weekend #NASW

It was a blast attending the New Adult Sleepover Weekend 12/6 - 12/8 in Savannah, Georgia.  For those of you unfamiliar with the genre of "New Adult", it refers to novels with characters ages 17-27. And it often includes some smokin' hot romance! I brought copies of my NA swimming romance Streamline , and met some fabulous authors and readers. I'd chatted with author RL Griffin online and read her intriguing novel By a Thread , so it was a pleasure to join her for the Suspense panel (my first author panel). We had a good diversity of genres represented, and my favorite comment was RL drawling, "Y'all, Streamline had so much drama it was like a Lifetime movie!" RL Griffin, Jennifer Lane, SM Boyce, Dawn Robertson Then came the book signing, where I celebrated my Navy novel: Cap'n Lane Saturday evening capped off with a pajama party. Here I am in my robe with the super friendly author Kelsey Ketch: The best part of Sa...

Booze and Good Times!

It's back to school time! And for many high school and college students, it's a time to experiment with alcohol. For adults harangued by work stress, parenting, or political mumbo-jumbo, it might be time to chug a glass of wine. For authors waiting to hear back from agents or publishers, it's time to drink. A lot. My question for you is: If you choose to drink alcohol, how do you get the good stuff without the bad stuff? (Aren't you lucky I'm writing this blog post between psychotherapy clients?) I've learned a lot about extracting buzz, relaxation, and fun from alcohol (while avoiding hangovers and beer goggles) from the amazing University of Washington researcher Dr. Alan Marlatt. He and colleagues published an interactive journal titled "CHOICES" related to the information in this book. ...and I want to pass along some golden nuggets to YOU. First of all let's talk about the choice to drink alcohol. Did you know about 20% of college st...
