Insecure Writers' Support Group: New Year, New Adult

Happy New Year to all insecure writers out there! Thank you to Alex Cavanaugh for bringing us together to vent, cajole, disclose, and lift up.

I write this post at midnight after just reaching 100,000 words on my WIP On Best Behavior. YAY! Of course I'm not finished yet but I'm only a couple of chapters away -- home stretch, baby. And I feel extra giddy because it's the third book of a trilogy. My first series!

Here's my one complaint for today: Why does it take so loooooonnnggg to write? WAAH.

When you're wrapping up one novel, do you already start mentally writing your next one? I have an idea for a New Adult romance percolating, and I can't wait to get started...after I finish and edit On Best Behavior, and after a little break.

What's the New Adult genre, you ask? If you're unfamiliar with NA, it's about characters ages 18-25. Read more HERE.

I love this time of life, particularly the university years. College and the beginning of graduate school was such a time of growth for me, and this potential for character change inspires me.

I've read some fantastic NA books, including Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia,  Slammed by Colleen Hoover, Easy by Tammara Webber (review HERE), and Where She Went by Gayle Forman (review HERE).

What do you think about New Adult? Love it? Hate it?
I think New Adult may be the hot genre of 2013. Do you agree? If not, which genre do you predict to be hottest?

New Adult is definitely taking off and I think it will continue to do so through 2013. :D

Happy New Year, Jen!

I haven't read too many, but I Di like that age group in characters. I've heard great things about Easy.

This is the first I've heard of this genre, but I'm definitely going to give it a go. Thanks for the tip.

Happy New Year!
Congratulations on crossing 100,000 words! I've never done that. And I can only think about one story at a time.

New Adult certainly does seem to be a buzz word these days. The Twenty-somethings are a fun time of life, so I definitely enjoy this emerging category.

Yahoo for you being so close to the end of draft 1!!

Hi Kyra, New Adult author! You should know. :-)

Miranda, I love the NA age group as well. Easy is about sexual assault so it's deeper than your average romance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Heather, since NA borders adult and YA, it's a big win all the way around! Hope you enjoy some great NA books. I recommend starting with Slammed by Colleen Hoover. Fabulous!

Hi Alex,

Unfortunately I write long novels, but fortunately I have an awesome editor who owns a manuscript chainsaw! I predict the manuscript will be about 108,000 words--similar to the second book in the series.

Nicki, 20 somethings are da bomb! ;-) I know I loved your NA Three Daves.

Congrats on reaching 100,000 words! I'm much like you in that I'm already mentally writing another novel while I'm working on whatever it is I'm writing. My most current WIP that is still in it's first draft stage is an idea I had over two years ago.

Thanks, Cherie. :-) That's great that you went back to a story from a couple of years ago.

NA is gaining a huge following. It is tough to handle the long time it takes to produce a great product, but it is so worth it in the end.
Happy 2013!

Ciara, I'm impatient by nature but I do well at persevering, so I know I'll finish (I'll just complain the whole time about how long it takes!) Off to visit your blog.
